5 Best Places to Watch Sunrise in Indonesia
“With sunrise you rise!”
I always remember that sentence, represents how I love the sunrise moment more than the sunset time. Or maybe it is because I am a morning person, I always love to wake up earlier to see how the sun begin the day with its golden and reddish touch.
Yes, waiting and watching the spectacle of a rising sun is always a prestigious way to start the day. Blessed with beautiful natural landscapes, my country, Indonesia, affords one the opportunity to watch a tropical sunrise accompanied by mountains, lakes and the landmarks of the country.
Here are five of the best places in Indonesia that offer magnificent sunrise views!
Kelimutu Lake, East Nusa Tenggara
Many visitors deliberately arrive at Kelimutu at dawn to watch the sunrise and enjoy its unique panoramic vista of a lake colored three different ways. On my visit to Kelimutu this year, I have proved that magnificent experience.
As Kelimutu is located on higher ground, a thick sea of clouds and mist are the first two things to be seen around the lake. It takes less than one hour from the Kelimutu National Park parking lot to the peak of Kelimuitu mountain to see the three lakes.
As the sun rises, the lake turns into a bowl of turquoise blue reflecting the rocky craters. It’s a truly splendid thing to behold.
Mount Bromo, East Java
Mount Bromo is one of Indonesia’s most favored places to see the sunrise on the island of Java. Watching the sun rising from Mount Penanjakan 1 is a mandatory activity for tourists visiting the place.
As you lay your eyes to the East, you can witness the amazing color combination of a blue, orange, yellow and red sunrise. But when facing the Southern area, you can enjoy a picturesque view of the mountain crests of Mount Batok, Mount Bromo and the majestic Mount Semeru.
Mount Agung, Bali
As the highest peak in Bali at 3,142 meters above sea-level, Mount Agung is a popular place to catch the sunrise for those feeling rather adventurous.
Located in the Karangasem regency, the mountain is considered, along with Besakih Temple, as Huluning Jagat Bali or the center of the godly power that protects Bali and its people.
Never been here before. But according to my brother, Rizky, the track leading to the peak is quite rocky. Yet the hard effort to get there is worth it as you watch the sunrise touch the sacred Hindu statue perched at the peak while surrounded by mysterious mist.
Make your way to the peak around 2 a.m. to ensure a memorable journey and breathtaking sunrise pictures to bring home.
Borobudur Temple, Central Java
For those seeking to enjoy sunrise at the most popular landmark in the country, head to Punthuk Setumbu Hill in Yogyakarta where the temple can be seen from the South-Western angle surrounded by lush forests with the Merapi and Merbabu mountains as an unbeatable background. Photographers can be found lurking at the hill to capture Borobudur’s panoramic view during the sunrise covered in a dramatic thick mist.
Another place is inside the temple itself, between the stupas. Waiting and watching the sun rising from this spot gave a dramatic feeling. You can see the dark silhouette of those stupas with the golden sunrise as the background.
Lake Toba, North Sumatra
There are many popular spots to enjoy the sunrise on Lake Toba. Among them are the Tele viewing tower and the One Tree Hill near the Taman Simalem Resort in Merek area. From the latter, you can delight at the combination of a golden sunrise and Lake Toba itself which is surrounded by splendid hills, thick clouds, mist and Mount Sinabung from afar.
As the sun gets higher, the reflection of its light on the lake offers a more dramatic view compared to Toba’s misty panorama at dawn.
