The sister island of Bali offers the white sand and the turquoise water more than you can imagine on its Southern part.
Beach lovers should definitely consider escaping to the southern part of Lombok island in West Nusa Tenggara — if they haven’t already. Mostly surrounded by breathtaking cliffs and pleasingly quiet compared to Bali beaches, there are at least four spots that within reach of Lombok International Airport in Central Lombok.
Those four beaches have somesimilarities, such as the white sand beach, surrounded by cliff and mountainous land and less crowded than Sengigi and the three Gilis: Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, which become popular earlier as the main beach destinations in Lombok.
Take your fresh water and snack or your own meals if you plan to visit the beaches. Because you can only find the food sellers at Kuta beach.
Kuta Beach
Less than a 30 minute drive from Lombok International Airport, you can consider Kuta Beach as a great option to kick-start your beach getaway on the island.
Situated right in the center of the Kuta area, it is less crowded compared to Kuta Beach in Bali, and has been a favorite spot for tourists to sunbathe, swim and take selfies.
Tanjung Aan Beach
Nestled near the Lombok Mandalika tourism area, Tanjung Aan offers more than just serene beach and friendly waves. Comparing to other beach, the area of Tanjung Aan beach could be the largest and most varied one. Visitors can marvel at the picturesque Meresek Hill and take photos at with the most attractive thing here, Batu Payung.
Batu Payung refers to a gigantic rock at the beach, separated from the main cliff. It is actually a cliff eroded and craved by the crashing wave. The locals see this rock like an umbrella (in Bahasa Indonesia: payung). Some tourist came to this spot to take photos while the local came for fishing.
Snorkelers can easily rent a small motorboat for Rp 300,000 (US$22.86) to reach nearby underwater spots.
Mawun Beach
At my first step to this area, I can see the very calm and pristine beach. Due to its calm surrounding, Mawun Beach is a popular destination for those seeking to sunbathe, swim or read a book.
Flanked by two hills to the west and east, visitors can climb them and enjoy the fantastic panorama from higher ground.
Selong Belanak Beach
Approximately one-and-a-half hour drive from Mataram, Selong Belanak is blessed with turquoise water and white sandy beaches that stretch as far as the eye can see.
While you reach this area, you will pass the green hills with the blue azure water in the middle of the hills and a small island pop out between the water. A beautiful vista from far and definitely a little gem while you visit the beach closely.
In addition to beach lovers, many beginner surfers can be found hitting the waves accompanied by an instructor.
